Song Chen suggested an idea (#1704) · Jun 29, 2017 at 05:53 PM · scriptscloudshell
As of CloudShell 8.0, we officially support Python 2.7.10. When will we officially support 3.x?
Python 2.7 will retire in less than 3 years and will not be maintained past 2020:
Although we can find workaround to run Python scripts with 3.x engine today, it will be good for us to officially upgrade from 2.7 to 3, e.g. 3.6.
We have customer such as VCE asking for this.
Thanks.

I'm curious why Quali started on Python 2.x instead of 3.x.
Maya Ber commented · Jul 04, 2017 at 09:36 AM
Thanks for the idea. The reason we started with python 2.x is that all of the customers that we interviewed back then strongly preferred 2.x. Actually most of our customers still use 2.x, although some are starting to plan moving to 3.x or doing some work on 3.x. We would like to support 3.x, we plan to do this when this is required by a critical mass of our users, and still need to decide if we continue to support 2.x side by side. Will be happy to hear your thoughts and also look forward to see the votes. In CloudShell 8.1 our API supports python 3.x (note that this is still not support for running python 3.x orchestration or shells)

Hi there,
This is a dilemma that many face. The majority of Python devs are using 2.x, but this is slowly swinging towards Python 3. Python 3 is a better overall language, and by supporting python 3 you take a strong stance for helping to move the Python org further along. Most popular libraries out there tend to support 2 and 3, but try to push 3. For example, the Django Web Framework has converted their tutorials and hello worlds to Python 3, to help encourage new (and existing) devs to get on Python 3.
Since Quali has been more dev focused lately, I don't think you'd regret jumping on the Python 3 train :)
But that's just my 2 cents anyways.
Thanks!
Jacob

This idea is now marked as Delivered. CloudShell 8.1 has a new version of its api package (cloudshell-automation-api) with support for both Python 2.x and 3.x.
In regards to having Python 3.x drivers, please refer to this idea and vote for it.
